On the relationship of church and state there are two extremes. At one extreme there is no separation. The government embraces a particular religion and that state church and the government act as one to suppress all other religions. At the other extreme the state is hostile to all religions and none is allowed expression in the public square. In that extreme secularism becomes the state religion. At either of these extremes, a militantly confessional state or a militantly secular state, there is no religious freedom. Between these extremes, and well removed from either, is where religious freedom can be found.
